Level 1 in Construction Skills (Bricklaying)

601/0523/9

Course Leader: Mr Andy Bulpin

What is Construction Skills?

This level 1 course which runs for one year and is designed to give candidates an insight into the construction industry. The skills and knowledge gained from the course will equip candidates with basic knowledge of the brickwork discipline and the construction industry today.

Why study this course?

If you have an interest in building, or learning practical skills and want to develop these, this is a course that will give a head start, allowing you to move on to a level 2 course or directly into the trade.

What will I learn on the Construction course?

You will learn foundation bricklaying construction methods and the key facts in health and safety. You will also gain an in-depth understanding of the industry and the roles within it. Practical elements are key and you will be taught the principles in modern brickwork.

How will I be assessed?

Although there are both theory and practical assessments it is the practical assessments that will form the majority of the course.

After several practice attempts you will be officially assessed during the course at the end of each unit. You will then be given individual written and verbal feedback. This will be graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction for individual units.

What can I do with a Construction qualification?

As it is a 1 year course this is best suited to lead into the Level 2 course. Other options are to lead into a construction related apprenticeship course or possibly straight into the workplace.

What are the Entry Requirements?

Potential candidates would have achieved 5 GCSE’s at grades 9-2 including both English and Maths but student’s results will be considered and discussed on an individual basis.

Is there anything else I need to know?

For the duration of the course you will be expected to find and attend a two day a week work experience placement to give you experience and depth of knowledge in the trade. This placement must be diarised and will go towards the overall coursework.
