Are you interested in building a career in the construction industry? Our Level 1 Construction Skills course is the perfect starting point, providing you with a solid foundation in brickwork and construction principles.
If you're passionate about building and want to develop your practical skills, this course is ideal for you. It will give you a head start in the industry, allowing you to move on to a Level 2 course or directly into a trade.
You'll be assessed through both theory and practical assessments, with a focus on practical skills. You'll receive individual feedback and grading for each unit, with the opportunity to improve and progress.
To join our Construction Skills course, you'll need to have achieved 5 GCSEs at grades 9-2, including both English and Maths. However, we'll consider individual cases and discuss entry requirements with you.
As part of the course, you'll be expected to find and attend a two-day-a-week work experience placement. This will give you valuable experience and insight into the trade, and will contribute to your overall coursework.

At West Somerset College, our Level 2 Automotive Engineering course is designed to give students a detailed insight into the automotive repair industry and its associated systems and technologies.
This one-year course is ideal for those with an interest in engineering, vehicles, and the mechanical and electronic workings of modern vehicles. The course provides a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of vehicles and the skills required to diagnose and repair problems.
The course is comprised of two main categories: theory-based and practical-based units. These units cover a breadth of systems, including:

We use an e-Portfolio system to store and showcase student work, which can be accessed securely from any internet-capable computer or tablet.
To join this course, students need to achieve 5 GCSEs at grades 9-3, including English and maths. It's desirable, but not essential, to have at least a grade 4 in maths.
Upon completing this course, students can progress to our Level 3 Automotive Engineering course, or consider a light vehicle apprenticeship course. Alternatively, they can apply for jobs in the automotive industry.
As part of this course, students participate in a work experience placement at a local automotive workshop or dealership, where they gain hands-on experience and develop skills in a real-world setting.
